About Substance Abuse
Substance abuse is associated with a range of destructive social conditions, including family disruptions, financial problems, lost productivity, failure in school, domestic violence, child abuse, and crime. Additionally, social attitudes and legal responses to the consumption of alcohol and illicit drugs make substance abuse one of the most complex public health issues facing our Nation today.

About Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators
The Leading Health Indicators (LHIs) represent a smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives selected to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them. LHIs are used to assess the health of the Nation, facilitate collaboration across sectors, and motivate action to improve the health of the U.S. population.
